Abstract

This paper is an attempt at exploring impoliteness strategies in the language of Abla Fahita’s TV show (The Duplex). Abla Fahita is an online public figure on Egyptian social media, who has become an online ‘millionaire'. The show gained popularity for its ‘off-beat’ utterances in mocking social issues. The Duplex currently plays a significant role in public discourse in Egypt. Impoliteness, mock impoliteness and underpoliteness appear prominently in the Duplex with the intention (not) to cause offence. New vocabulary appeared having embarrassing connotations conceived of as a form of cooperative and simulated rudeness. Abla Fahita gives a new model of the Mock-Impolite or Underpolite Person.
